Artist Lucien Freud painted four portraits of 'Big Sue' |
An etching of one of Lucien Freud's favourite models, nicknamed Big Sue, has sold at auction for 26,180. Woman with an Arm Tattoo, which shows Jobcentre manager Sue Tilley sleeping, was created by Freud during sittings for a series of paintings.
Freud gave Ms Tilley the print, which she has sold off from her collection.
An etched print of Freud's lawyer Lord Goodman in his yellow pyjamas, drawn in 1987, was also sold at Bloomsbury Auctions in London. It fetched 35,700.
Lord Goodman was a powerful public figure, working for Prime Minister Harold Wilson.
He was also chairman of the British Arts Council and when, in 1996, Freud asked him to sit for a portrait, Lord Goodman said he only had time to pose in the mornings whilst eating breakfast in bed.
Woman with an Arm Tattoo easily beat its predicted price of 16,000 in the contemporary prints sale.
Sue Tilley sat for four paintings over a three to four-year period.
Although she has a number of tattoos - including one on her shoulder and upper arm - this was the only picture in which Freud included one of them.
The etching was produced during a break from a sitting for his first portrait of her.
