Mary Louise Parker stars a drug-dealing mother in Weeds
The four lead stars of Desperate Housewives were beaten to the best TV comedy actress Golden Globe by Mary Louise Parker of Weeds fame.

Despite the quartet missing out on the award they celebrated winning best comedy for the second year running.

Hit shipwreck series Lost was named best TV drama, capping off a hugely successful year.

UK actor Hugh Laurie won best dramatic actor for House, beating 24's Kiefer Sutherland and Lost's Matthew Fox.

The Office's Steve Carrell was the surprise winner of the best comedy actor award, picking up the same award that brought international fame to Ricky Gervais in 2004 for the same role.

Commander in Chief star Geena Davis fought off stiff competition from Patricia Arquette for Medium and Glenn Close for The Shield to win the best dramatic TV actress award.

Weeds tells the story of a suburban widow who turns to selling marijuana to support her family.

Following her award, Parker said: "I thought we were all kind of desperate housewives.

"Mine was just a little more desperate than they were."

The mini-series Empire Falls, about a struggling New England town, won a Golden Globe while its star Paul Newman was honoured with a best actor award for his performance.

Irish actor Jonathan Rhys-Meyer, who is currently starring in Woody Allen's Match Point, won the best actor in a TV movie for his portrayal of Elvis Presley in Elvis.

Sandra Oh, who starred in indie hit movie Sideways, won the best supporting actress in a drama for Grey's Anatomy, another medical series which has proved a hit in the US.
