Soap actor Richard Fleeshman said he was amazed to win |
Coronation Street actor Richard Fleeshman has won ITV1 song contest Soapstar Superstar in a live final showdown with colleague Andy Whyment. The 16-year-old, who plays Craig Harris, was one of 10 stars from various soaps who took part in the contest that ran over nine nights.
He said: "It's amazing. It's all been worthwhile, it's just amazing."
His prize was a 50,000 donation for children's hospice charity, the Kirsty Appeal, which ITV1 doubled to 100,000.
Fleeshman and Whyment (who plays Kirk Sutherland in Coronation Street) performed four songs each in Saturday's final in front of a panel of judges headed by Cilla Black, who gave their opinions but left it to the viewers to phone in and vote on who should be the winner.
Other contestants throughout the series were former EastEnders actors Nicholas Bailey (Dr Antony Trueman) and Michael Greco (Beppe di Marco), current Coronation Street regulars Shobna Gulati (Sunita Alahan) and Wendi Peters (Cilla Battersby-Brown), and Lee Otway (Bombhead) from in Hollyoaks.
Emmerdale stars Roxanne Pallett (Jo Stiles), Sammy Winward (Katie Sugden) and Lucy Pargeter (Chastity Dingle) also sang.
Pargeter came third in the contest but, under the format of the series, only learned she was not taking part in the final at the start of Saturday's show.
