British television shows are a decade behind American TV, US host Jerry Springer has said. "Your talk shows are like ours were 10 years ago," he said. "They plod along - it could be radio."
The US presenter is replacing talk show host Trisha Goddard on ITV1 following her move to rival UK channel Five.
He added: "What you do great are your documentaries. You still do TV with a stiff upper lip and when you do that it's excellent, the best there is."
'Newer to you'
Springer said the slower pace of UK television meant "virtually all" live UK shows "could be on radio". "That's not a criticism - it's just newer to you here," he told Radio Times magazine.
Springer said he wanted viewers to be able to enjoy his shows "with the sound off". "If you still kind of know what's going on, that's compelling," he said.
He reserved his strongest criticism for US TV news, calling it "sensationalistic, inaccurate, not important, teasing".
Springer said his US chat show, The Jerry Springer Show - which regularly shows confrontations between members of the public - cannot be criticised in the same way.
"Ours is entertainment. Big difference. Our show is a circus, period," he said.
"You want to be part of the circus, with a big wink? Come on. But if you say 'this is what's happening in the world, this is news,' you have a responsibility to be truthful."
