King Kong UK debut beats Narnia

King Kong is a remake of the 1933 original
King Kong has knocked Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe off the top of the UK and Ireland box office in its debut week.

Peter Jackson's remake of the classic film took �6m, ending Narnia's reign after just one week.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire also fell one place to number three, after taking slightly more than �1m.

The Family Stone, starring Sex and the City actress Sarah Jessica Parker, entered the chart at number five.

Also in the top five was Flightplan, starring Jodie Foster, which has taken a total of �5,550,239, since its release four weeks ago.

King Kong took �10.1m worldwide in its first day on release last Wednesday.

Two other new entries in the top 10 are Lassie, which took �132,926 to take the sixth slot, and Bollywood film Bluff Master, which took �85,437.
