| Wednesday, 22 September, 1999, 07:26 GMT 08:26 UK The Clash on film ![]() Punk heroes: The Clash's Mick Jones in 1980 Members of The Clash reunited in London on Tuesday night at the premiere of a new documentary about the influential punk band. The group's best-known line-up - frontman Joe Strummer, guitarist Mick Jones, bassist Paul Simonon and drummer Topper Headon - were at the screening of Westway To The World at the Coronet cinema in Notting Hill. Renowned for mixing punk with reggae, blues and funk, the band are best known for songs like London Calling, Rock The Casbah, Bankrobber and White Riot - but never made it into the top 10 before they split in 1986. In the documentary, which will also be shown on BBC Two next month, Strummer, Jones, Simonon, and Headon - together with drummer Terry Chimes - talk about the band's origins in the 1970s punk explosion, their dealings with managers and record companies, and the band's decline in the 1980s.
Mick Jones was sacked the following year, and Strummer and Simonon continued with replacements. But they found their 1985 album Cut The Crap was a commercial and critical disaster. After leaving the band, Mick Jones formed Big Audio Dynamite, while Strummer has been a solo artist and filled in as singer with The Pogues. The Clash finally made number one in 1991 when Should I Stay Or Should I Go? was used in a jeans commercial. But the band members resisted the temptation of a lucrative reunion. Now the group are releasing an album of live tracks, From Here To Eternity, which is made up of live recordings personally selected by Strummer, Jones and Simonon. But they are determined the band will not reform. "Whatever a group is, it's the chemical mixture of those four people that makes a group work, and you can take one away and replace them with whoever you like and it's never going to work," said Strummer. Westway To The World will be shown on BBC Two at 2130 BST on Saturday 2 October. | Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Entertainment stories now: Links to more Entertainment stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
