 Legal sheet music sites allow musicians to download scores |
A crackdown on websites that illegally publish musical scores is harming legitimate sheet music download services, one company has warned. The Music Publishers' Association (MPA) has said it will target "big sites that people would think are legitimate".
But customers are now confused about which sites really are legal, according to Jonathan Irons, who runs legitimate download site Sheetmusicnow.com.
Such sites allow musicians to pay for scores over the net and print them.
'Scepticism'
Mr Irons said he supported the MPA campaign against illegal sites but the stance was causing "considerable damage".
"The picture that comes over is that the MPA thinks that music download sites are illegal," he said.
"We feel this is adding to the scepticism around and we do expect this to have a negative effect."
Last week, MPA president Lauren Keiser said he wanted to pursue sites that published unlicensed song scores and lyrics and wanted owners to be jailed.
