Gorillaz's Demon Days came next in the Q ranking, followed by Employment by Kaiser Chiefs and the Oasis release Don't Believe The Truth.

Tracks from the top albums - Oasis' The Importance of Being Idle, Coldplay's Fix You and Kaiser Chiefs' I Predict A Riot - were named singles of the year.

Coldplay were named best act in the world at the Q Awards in October.

X&Y's release had been delayed until June after Coldplay said they were not happy with some of the material from early recording sessions.

The album went straight to the top of the US Billboard 200 chart, having already entered at number one in the UK.

More than 464,000 copies of the album were sold in the UK in its first week, making it the second fastest-selling album since records began in the early 1990s.
