The suite will mix grime with hip hop and classical music |
Figures from the UK's grime music scene are teaming up with the BBC Concert Orchestra to create and perform a 70-minute suite. Urban Classic will unite grime producer DaVinChe with jazz musician Jason Yarde and conductor Charles Hazlewood.
Written with help from young musicians, the grime, hip hop and classical suite will be performed at Hackney Empire.
Highlights from the 16 February concert will be broadcast on BBC digital station 1Xtra and BBC Radio 3.
'Push scene forward'
Grime, which mixes UK garage with US hip-hop and Jamaican ragga, has built up a strong following through artists such as Kano, Wiley and Shystie.
London MCs Bruza, Tor, Pase, Purple and beatboxer Faith SFX will perform the finished suite with the BBC Concert Orchestra, with DJ sets from 1Xtra's Semtex and Cameo.
1Xtra's programmes editor, Willber Willberforce, said: "Each organisation and individual will bring together their unique talents and knowledge to create something very special.
"It will be a first for our listeners and push the UK's emerging grime scene ever forward."
The musicians begin writing the suite this month, with rehearsals and workshops throughout January and February.
The project has been organised by the BBC with music producer Serious and music education charity Bigga Fish.
