Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was based on Roald Dahl's book

The film version of Roald Dahl's famous book notched up 30,000 online votes in the only category chosen by children.

But it failed to win the Bafta panel's award for the best feature film - that prize went to The Incredibles.

Meanwhile, BBC TV duo Dick and Dom, who won two awards last year and were nominated for another two this year, left the ceremony empty-handed.

RAD: The Groms Tour America won the entertainment category after getting its third consecutive nomination, pipping last year's winner Dick And Dom In Da Bungalow.

The pair were beaten in the presenter category by Michaela Strachan. She picked up the prize for her programme Michaela's Wild Challenge.

It was the first time that Strachan - who has presented children's shows for nearly 20 years - had triumphed at the Children's Baftas.

Other children's television programmes to win awards included toddlers' favourites Boogie Beebies, which won the pre-school live action prize, and cartoon Peppa Pig, which scooped the pre-school animation prize.

A programme called Scene: Oddsquad won two awards - Schools Drama and Original Writer, for the show's writers John Godber and Jane Thornton.
