Paxman denied he was unhappy presenting the weather bulletins |
After just 10 days and a flurry of complaints, Newsnight's weather reports are to be ditched in favour of the resurrected nightly market updates. The switch to weather caused unexpected anger among the BBC Two show's viewers.
This week Newsnight producers polled viewers on the future of the slot - with decisive results.
"Commiserations to all those viewers who enjoyed our weather, but at least it's been a good day for democracy," said Newsnight editor Peter Barron.
With 62% of the poll, the markets will resume on Monday - with the last weather report due to air on Saturday.
Caustic remarks
Former chancellor Lord Lamont led the campaign to have the market updates reinstated, while meteorologist Michael Fish struck out for the weather bulletins in a poll of 5,921 viewers.
"I would rather watch Jeremy Paxman squirm at the indignity of presenting the weather," said one weather champion.
While a markets supporter announced: "Is it a coincidence that the weather has been appalling since Jeremy Paxman took charge of it? Give us back the markets please."
Newsnight host Paxman denied he was unhappy with the weather bulletins, but his caustic remarks suggested otherwise.
In one report he told viewers: "So finally and controversially - tomorrow's weather forecast.
"It's a veritable smorgasbord. Sun. Rain. Thunder. Hail. Snow. Cold. Wind. Almost worth going to work."
