National beats wedding in ratings
Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall
The couple were married in a civil ceremony in Windsor
More people watched the BBC's coverage of the Grand National than the wedding of Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles, according to figures.

An average of 6.2m viewers tuned in to the wedding on Saturday with the figure peaking at 7.6m during the couple's blessing at St George's Chapel.

Meanwhile, Grand National Grandstand attracted an average of 7.3m viewers, rising to 9.5m during the race itself.

An average of 1.1m viewers watched coverage of the royal wedding on ITV1.

Peak figure

The BBC said their peak figure for the wedding represented around 49% of the audience share, peaking at 53% of the audience share when the viewing figures were at their highest.

ITV1's peak figure represented around 13.3% of the audience share, an equivalent of 1.9m viewers.

The figure rose after the BBC's coverage of the wedding ended, while theirs continued to run for a further half-hour. However, they attracted only 1m viewers around the time of the blessing, the peak time for viewers tuning in to BBC One.

The BBC's coverage of the marriage began at noon and finished at 1530 BST while ITV1's coverage ran from 1400BST to 1545 BST.

Around 800 people attended the wedding, which began with a small private civil ceremony at Windsor's Guildhall followed by the blessing at St George's Chapel, led by the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Guests from the world of entertainment included broadcaster Sir David Frost, musicians Phil Collins and Jools Holland, comedians Stephen Fry and Rowan Atkinson, and actors Edward Fox, Kenneth Branagh and Joanna Lumley.
