Evelyn Glennie: Leading the park's last night concert

Voice of an Angel singing sensation Charlotte Church will then close the festival at the inaugural children's Proms in the Park, the following day.

It's nothing new for the annual two-month music fest to wind-up with both the park concert and the extravaganza from the hall.

But it is the first time Evelyn will have treated the last night outdoor audience to a performance.

The CBBC Proms in the Park is also totally untried too.

Ordinary angel

Hosted by Blue Peter presenter Katy Hill, and featuring many other CBBC favourites, the concert aims to promote classical music among the young.

"What could be more important than providing an enjoyable, relaxed way for children and their families to encounter the fun of classical music with some of the best known names from Children's TV?" says Proms director Nicholas Kenyon.

And Charlotte Church's presence, alongside the likes of The Chuckle Brothers, S Club 7, Chris Jarvis and Mr Blobby, will give the proceedings added appeal.

Still only 13 years old, Charlotte makes the ideal ambassador for classical music among her peers.

She is now an international celebrity, after being catapulted into the limelight on the Jonathan Ross Big Big Talent Show in 1996.

The success of her first album Voice of an Angel has subsequently made her an international star.

But although the fresh-faced soprano can also boast to having sung for President Clinton, and to taking elevenses with the Pope, she insists she is just an ordinary teenager.

"Like any other girl, I love shopping; combat trousers, jeans, shoes - especially shoes, I have 14 pairs not including trainers," says Charlotte.

"As for the ball gowns I have to wear for concerts, I hate them. That's one thing that's got to change. I am also a real big fan of computer games, especially the gory ones."

Her musical tastes are just like any chart-watching schoolgirl too.

"The last CD I bought was Natalie Imbruglia and I love The Corrs, and Ricky Martin," she enthuses.

On Sunday, however, she will be opting for something a little less frenetic, as she performs Pie Jesu, Ave Maria and La Pastorella.

And, along with everyone else involved in the day, she hopes it will go a long way towards proving that classical music is great fun.

Passionate percussion

Like Charlotte, Evelyn Glennie, 34, is passionate about the value of what she does and wants nothing more than to pass that enthusiasm on to the young.

"It is important to encourage children to become involved with music and it's every performer's dream to think that when they play they might be planting the seed in a young person's mind to become curious towards it," she says.

What's more, Evelyn believes her own particular skill can go a long way to realising this dream.

"Participation is really important and that is where percussion is so good. There are so many instruments and you can really share those with a great variety of people," she explains.
