Christian O'Connell was successful at last year's awards |
DJs Zane Lowe and Christian O'Connell head the shortlist for the Sony radio awards, with three nominations each. BBC Radio 1's Lowe and O'Connell, of London-based Xfm, who both specialise in new music, will do battle in the best DJ category.
Johnny Vaughan's breakfast show on Capital FM is also nominated, but Terry Wogan and Chris Moyles miss out.
BBC Radio 1's Colin Murray and Edith Bowman face Radio 2's Johnnie Walker in the daily music show category.
The annual ceremony is the most prestigious in the radio industry.
Digital stations
O'Connell, who also appears on BBC Radio Five Live's Fighting Talk, could pick up his second DJ of the year award on the trot.
He won the coveted prize last year, beating Jonathan Ross and Chris Moyles to the honours.
Colin Murray and Edith Bowman's daytime show is up for an award |
While Radio 1's Moyles and Radio 2's Wogan miss out on nominations for their breakfast show, Johnny Vaughan is up against O'Connell's Xfm show, Hirsty's Daily Dose on Leeds-based Galaxy 105, MacDonald and Maguire on Manchester's Magic 1152, and the Ugly Phil show on West Midlands rock station Kerrang! 105.2. BBC Radio 4 failed to be nominated for UK station of the year, despite winning for the past two years. But sister stations Radio 1 and 2 compete against Classic FM for the prize.
BBC digital radio stations 6 Music and BBC 7 are up against children's network Capital Disney for digital terrestrial station of the year.
Comedy award
Local radio has received a slew of nominations this year, with BBC London's Danny Baker, Julian Moorhouse from Manchester's Key 103 and Jo and Twiggy from Nottingham station 96 Trent FM in the running for DJ of the year.
The BBC's stations in Berkshire and Newcastle go up against BBC Radio Ulster and Radio 4's Today programme in the news output award category.
There is a comedy award nod for an episode of the Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy on Radio 4, which returned to the air last September after an absence of 26 years.
The ceremony is due to take place at London's Grosvenor House Hotel on 9 May.
