Abdul fined for driving offence
Paula Abdul
Paula Abdul's lawyer says she was unaware of the collision
American Idol judge Paula Abdul has been put on probation for two years and ordered to pay fines for hitting a car last December and driving away.

Abdul must pay $1,675 (895) in fines and to reimburse the other motorist for damage done to their car.

Abdul was traced through a photograph taken on a mobile phone and her number plate, after she changed lanes and struck the other car.

The singer's lawyer said she was unaware the collision had occurred.

He added that Abdul "took full responsibility" after initially failing to stop and exchange insurance information with the other driver.

Jail threat

Abdul, who scored a string of hits in the late 80s and early 90s such as Straight Up and Opposites Attract, has been placed on informal probation, so she is not obliged to report to a probation officer.

But if she breaks any more laws, she could face higher fines and even a jail sentence.

The US charge of hit and run carries a maximum penalty of six months in jail and a $1,000 (535).

Abdul and fellow American Idol judge Simon Cowell are known for their confrontational on-screen relationship and differences in musical opinion.

In March 2004, Cowell denied making an obscene gesture at Abdul during one the shows.

The programme has run for a number of seasons, and has proved a huge ratings winner for US television network Fox.
