Patrick Troughton starred as Robin Hood in a 1953 BBC production

The 13-part series will be written by Dominic Minghella, brother of Oscar-winning director Anthony.

"Robin Hood has some of the most iconic characters of fiction," said BBC drama commissioning controller Jane Tranter.

"We will be looking to create exciting opportunities for fresh, young talent." The series will follow ITV's hit 1980s series Robin of Sherwood.

Famous gallantry

In the ITV series the lead role was taken by Michael Praed then Jason Connery.

A 1953 BBC production cast Patrick Troughton as Robin Hood, while Errol Flynn and Kevin Costner were among those to play him in Hollywood movies.

The legendary figure was famous for his gallantry, robbing the rich to feed the poor and fighting against injustice and tyranny.

The BBC series is being produced with Tiger Aspect, creators of shows such as Teachers, the Vicar of Dibley and Seaside Parish, it was confirmed on Monday.

Family audience

It will be broadcast in the same Saturday evening BBC One timeslot as Doctor Who, which became a ratings hit earlier this year by attracting a family audience.

While Robin Hood originates from Sherwood Forest, Nottinghamshire, producers aim to film part of the new series in eastern Europe.

They said they did not want to rely too heavily upon computer effects and are seeking actors who can shoot longbows.
