Colombian pop star Shakira has been nominated for six awards |
MTV has postponed its Latin America Music Awards ceremony in Mexico due to the approach of Hurricane Wilma. Wilma, the strongest hurricane recorded in the Atlantic according to the US Hurricane centre, was due to brush past the awards venue Playa del Carmen.
MTV previously moved the show forward by a day to Wednesday, but then said it would postpone it indefinitely.
Colombian pop star Shakira is up for six nominations at the Latin America awards, including best female artist.
'Close enough'
MTV said in a statement: "While the eye of the storm is not expected to hit the Mexican Caribbean, we feel its effect is close enough to greatly impact our production."
Hurricane Wilma, which has winds of nearly 165 mph and heavy rains, is threatening Cuba, Mexico and the Cayman Islands, forecasters said on Wednesday.
Colombian Juanes, Argentine group Miranda and Mexican rockers Molotov have also received several nominations each for the Latin America Awards.
It is the second time this year that weather has hit one of MTV's shows.
In August, Hurricane Katrina hurled wind and rain on the pre-ceremony festivities of the MTV Video Music Awards in Miami, although it did not interrupt the main show.
