Actor and comedian Stephen Fry is to take up a guest role in BBC Radio 4's The Archers after winning a vote on the station's Today programme. Fry will feature on a special episode of the rural drama to be broadcast on Friday to mark Red Nose Day.
The 47-year-old fought off Ewan McGregor, Sir Ian McKellen and Liza Tarbuck to win the charity vote.
"It's like Christmas, I couldn't be more thrilled," Fry said. The phone vote raised �13,448 for Comic Relief.
'Pivotal part'
"As a child, a barely-divided embryo, I remember sitting under my mother's knees listening to The Archers' music.
"There's no escape from it, it's stitched into the fabric of my being," he said.
The special episode - to be aired at 1530 GMT on Friday and 0945 on Saturday - has been written by comedian Victoria Wood.
"He has a pivotal part to play - he comes in and helps with the general atmosphere of Ambridge," she said.
