Midge Ure previously played in Thin Lizzy, Visage and Ultravox

Singer and Live Aid co-founder Midge Ure has received an honorary degree from Dundee's University of Abertay.

The ex-Ultravox star was commended for his artistic and charity work over the past 30 years.

He said: "Having left school at the age of 15, I never expected to receive such an accolade."

Ure had 16 hits with Ultravox, such as Vienna and Love's Great Adventure,

before creating Band Aid, Live Aid and Live 8 with Bob Geldof to help Africa.

New Romantic

Born in Glasgow, Ure previously performed in New Romantic act Visage and replaced Gary Moore in rock band Thin Lizzy.

He also acted as musical director on rock concerts for The Prince's Trust and breast cancer charity Breakthrough, and was made an OBE in the Queen's Honours.

"It's an absolute honour and I will cherish this moment for ever," said Ure, 52, on receiving his degree on Wednesday.

"To be honest, I thought it would just come through the post."
