His statement followed claims Ms Scott had tried to make his bandmates Ronnie Wood and Keith Richards stop smoking and change their clothes.

"It is completely untrue to say L'Wren has caused a rift between myself and the rest of the band," Jagger said.

"We have not had any disagreements about clothes, smoking or L'Wren, and this is all very hurtful for her."

Ms Scott, he continued, "would not dream of interfering with a band who have been on the road for 40 years".

He added: "In fact the band, their wives and girlfriends are all getting along extremely well."

The Rolling Stones are currently touring the US with their A Bigger Bang tour.

Jagger's spokesman said he had released the "unprecedented" statement because he felt "aggrieved" over "untrue" claims in the British press that likened Ms Scott to John Lennon's widow Yoko Ono.

Ronnie Wood's wife Jo has also leapt to Ms Scott's defence.

"L'Wren has got great taste, is fantastic company and is just one of the girls on tour," she said.

"Ronnie is the only one who can stop himself from smoking. No-one can tell him to stop."

Jo Wood admitted Jagger's 38-year-old partner had given some "wonderful jackets" to her husband.

However, she said Wood "has the same look which he has had forever and that's not about to change".

Born Luann Bambrough, the American-born Ms Scott is a former model who has spent the past decade working as a stylist.

She and Jagger, 62, have been together for four years.

"There is no friction between band members about their health, image or what they wear on stage," said the Stones' tour manager Michael Cohl.

"It is nonsense to even think that what the band wear for their shows at this point in their career is even a talking point."
