The 18 lots went under the hammer at Sotheby's on Wednesday, with only two lots failing to sell.

Among the highlights was a faux leopard-skin Louis XVI style salon suite which sold for �3,300.

The singer decided to sell the items as she plans to redecorate her apartment, her manager Beaudoin Mills said.

Other items in the sale included a mahogany chest which sold for �9,600 - more than �8,000 above the estimate.

A Sevres style porcelain and gilt bronze mounted vase and a white marble figure of a hermaphrodite reclining were other highlights of the sale.

However, two paintings did not sell.

Dame Shirley, whose hits include Big Spender, is planning a more simple style of decoration in her ornate Monaco apartment.

The 68-year-old star was born Shirley Veronica Bassey on 8 January 1937, in Cardiff's dockside region of Tiger Bay.

Her first single was Burn My Candle, but her first real hit was Banana Boat Song, while her debut album, Born to Sing the Blues, was released in 1958.

Dame Shirley's first big international hit was 1964's Goldfinger, the theme for a James Bond film.
