Douglas said nuclear proliferation was getting "out of control" |
Michael Douglas has criticised the United Nations (UN) over its failure to reach an agreement on nuclear weapons. The actor visited the UN in New York on Wednesday - International Peace Day - and called on the US and other states to show leadership on disarmament.
He said the UN should be "completely embarrassed" for not addressing the issue at a summit last week.
"We could not come up with any wording or phrasing regarding the issues of nuclear proliferation," he said.
"Hopefully the silence of that is going to be embarrassing and awkward enough for enough countries to go back and re-evaluate and see if we can't come up with a plan."
'Out of control'
Douglas commemorated International Peace Day by joining UN Secretary General Kofi Annan as he rang a "peace bell" three times.
They were joined by Italian writer Anna Cataldi, British environmentalist Jane Goodall and author and Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel.
Douglas said nations contemplating nuclear arms programmes should not be placated with aid.
"But I personally feel that a lot of this got out of control when we (the US) ignored some basic treaties that have taken years and years to create."
