Fortune described his win as 'a dream come true' |
A Canadian is to be the new lead singer of rock band INXS after a worldwide search to replace the late Michael Hutchence. Jason Dean Fortune, 31, known as J D Fortune, beat two other finalists and will record an album and embark on a world tour with the Australian band.
INXS held auditions in six continents as part of a reality TV series.
Since Hutchence died in 1997, INXS have continued with a number of temporary singers including Terence Trent D'Arby.
However the band, famous for hits such as New Sensation, have never recorded a full album since Hutchence was found hanged in a Sydney hotel room, at the age of 37.
Fortune was named the winner during a televised final in Los Angeles on Tuesday night.
The other two finalists in the TV show were estate agent Marty Casey and the star of London's We Will Rock You, Mig Ayesa.
Fortune said: "It's an understatement to say this is a dream come true.
An inquest found Michael Hutchence committed suicide |
"Growing up, INXS were a huge musical influence on me. I'd listen to their songs and wonder what it would be like to be in this band.
"That they've chosen me to be their new lead singer is just mind-blowing."
While some fans have been unhappy about searching for a new lead singer through a TV show, INXS has insisted it is not trying to find a direct replacement for Hutchence.
Guitarist Tim Farriss said: "J D has a slightly dangerous edge and will bring a sense of spontaneity to our live show.
"In addition, he has both the star quality we were looking for and is an inspired lyricist.
"I think he'll grow with us on all levels. We're a complete band once again."
