Tsotsi won two awards in August at the Edinburgh Film Festival

Tsotsi, about a gangster who steals a car and finds a baby on the back seat, won the People's Choice award, often an indicator of future Oscar candidates.

Look Both Ways won the Discovery award, a prestigious prize voted on by 750 members of the international media.

The festival ended with Edison, a crime thriller starring Justin Timberlake.

The pop star plays as a crusading young reporter in the film, which also stars Morgan Freeman and Kevin Spacey.

Before Saturday's screening the former 'N Sync member paid tribute to Freeman, calling him a "master of subtlety".

'Unprecedented'

Tsotsi triumphed over more high-profile titles, including Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain - winner of the Golden Lion at this year's Venice Film Festival.

Last year's recipient of the People's Choice award, Hotel Rwanda, went on to be nominated for three Oscars.

Other prizes went to the Canadian films Familia, CRAZY and The Life and Hard Times of Guy Terrifico.

The final days of the festival saw a flurry of celebrity activity as a host of stars descended on the Canadian city.

Annette Bening, Pierce Brosnan, LL Cool J and Helena Bonham Carter were among the actors appearing on the red carpet.

Festival co-director Noah Cowan said the number of stars who had attended the 10-day event was "unprecedented".

"We were thrilled to host so many wonderful films from around the world."
