Sunday's American football Super Bowl was watched by four million viewers fewer than last year's game, despite a half-time show from Sir Paul McCartney. An estimated average of 86.1 million tuned in, down from the 90 million who saw the 2004 game and Janet Jackson's infamous "wardrobe malfunction".
Sunday's viewing figures were lower than seven of the past 10 Super Bowls.
But a Fox representative said the lower ratings could be because the game was 25 minutes shorter than last year's.
Jackson caused outrage in 2004 by exposing a breast during a dance routine, landing the CBS TV network a record $550,000 (�292,000) fine.
Organisers were widely considered to be playing it safe this year by booking 62-year-old Sir Paul for his second Super Bowl show.
And the veteran singer promised before the event there would be no repeat of the 2004 controversy.
The Black Eyed Peas and Alicia Keys provided the night's other entertainment by performing in a pre-game show.
Fox estimated 134 million viewers saw at least part of this year's game - down from last year's 143.6 million, an all-time Super Bowl high.
