Ex-Wonder Woman star Carter will play Mama Morton

The 54-year-old actress will make her London stage debut on 26 September in the role of jail matron Mama Morton.

Meanwhile EastEnders star Nigel Harman will replace Ewan McGregor in West End musical Guys and Dolls in December, one month after leaving the BBC soap opera.

Online retailer Lastminute.com said celebrities have helped boost ticket sales for West End theatres.

Critical praise

A former Miss World USA, Lynda Carter starred in the 1970s Wonder Woman TV series and recently appeared in The Dukes of Hazzard movie.

Her Mama Morton role was previously taken by performers such as singer Alison Moyet in London's Adelphi Theatre production.

Harman previously appeared in musicals Mamma Mia! and Tommy

Nigel Harman, who plays Dennis Rickman in EastEnders, will take McGregor's role as gambler Sky Masterson in Guys and Dolls from 5 December.

McGregor won critical praise in what was his first stage musical role.

Harman, 32, previously appeared in West End musicals Mamma Mia!, Damn Yankees and Tommy, and in Privates on Parade by Michael Grandage, director of the Guys and Dolls musical.

Ex-Coronation Street actress Sarah Lancashire will be Harman's co-star.

High-profile revelations

They are the latest in several TV and film stars to appear in the West End.

Sales of West End theatre tickets from website Lastminute.com have tripled in the past year, the online retailer said.

Film star Sienna Miller's role in As You Like It at the Wyndham's Theatre was the most popular show among Lastminute customers.

Demand to see her in the Shakespeare adaptation rose after high-profile revelations about her private life, the retailer said.

"Sienna Miller has definitely made an impact this year, with people wanting to catch a glimpse of her in the flesh, especially after her split from Jude Law," the company's head of theatre Mark Bower said.
