The joint HBO and BBC movie picked up six awards including those for cinematography and editing.

Western TV series Deadwood, which stars British actor Ian McShane, took five awards at the ceremony in Los Angeles.

A documentary by British cameraman James Miller, who was killed during the making Death in Gaza, won three awards.

Miller's family were at the ceremony to accept the awards on his behalf, including outstanding direction for a non-fiction programme.

Colleagues completed editing on the film following his death in 2003.

His family is pursuing legal action against the Israeli army, accusing a soldier of shooting him after declaring he was a journalist and waving a white flag.

Among other big winners on Sunday was the drama series Lost, which won four awards, as did Desperate Housewives.

Charity honour

As well as technical awards, acting honours for guest stars in shows were handed out with Amanda Plummer winning for Law and Order: Special Victims Unit and Ray Liotta for ER.

Guest stars in a comedy awards went to Bobby Cannavale for Will and Grace and Kathryn Joosten for Desperate Housewives.

Jerry Lewis was given the Governors Award for his charity work.

He hosts an annual Labour Day telethon which raises money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Accepting his award, he said: "I am probably the most selfish man you will ever meet in your life.

"No one gets the satisfaction or the joy that I get out of seeing kids realise there is hope."

The Primetime Emmy Awards, which focuses more on the stars, will be handed out on 18 September.
