 Sharon Stone implored delegates to donate money |
Actress Sharon Stone has collected $1m (�530,000) to fight malaria in five minutes at an impromptu fund-raiser. The Basic Instinct star pledged some of her own money to buy nets to protect against bites from mosquitoes carrying the deadly disease.
She then implored others at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland to do the same and about 30 delegates responded - one man promised $50,000 (�26,475).
Actress Angelina Jolie was also there, and called Stone's act "wonderful".
Jolie, who is a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations, said: "We can all contribute in our own way."
'Just stand up'
The 46-year-old actress made her plea at a conference on African poverty after it was revealed that 150,000 children were dying of malaria every month because they did not possess protective bed nets.
"I'd like to offer you $10,000 to buy some bed nets today," Stone told Tanzanian President Benjamin Mkapa, who was on the panel.
"Just stand up. Just stand up. People are dying in his country today, and that is not okay with me," Stone told the delegates.
The money will go to the Global Fund to fight Aids, tuberculosis and malaria.
The nets, which are a simple way of protecting against malaria-carrying mosquitoes, can be purchased for about $7 (�3.70) each.
