Emmy award-winning actress Stockard Channing has been charged with drink driving in Los Angeles. The 60-year-old star, who portrays the first lady in TV's The West Wing, was stopped by police after trying to drive around a roadblock last month.
She was arrested and has been bailed to appear in court on 9 February.
Channing, who also appeared in the original Grease movie, won a supporting actress Emmy in 2001 for her role in the White House drama The West Wing.
The actress was jailed for three hours on 14 December before being granted bail, according to the Sheriff's department of Los Angeles.
Imprisonment
She was charged with two counts of driving under the influence of alcohol, each of which carry a maximum term of six months imprisonment and a fine of $1, 000 (535).
Channing was seen driving on the hard shoulder of the Hollywood Freeway after the northbound lane was closed to remove a broken-down trailer, said a spokesman for Calfornia's Highway Patrol.
The actress was stopped by police and made to provide a breath sample, which was found to be over the legal limit.
Channing's manager, Ernest Johns, was not available for comment.
