US comedian Bill Cosby has been investigated by police following an allegation made by a female acquaintance, his lawyer has said. Attorney Walter Phillips said on Thursday he had spoken with police in Pennsylvania over the allegation.
He would not discuss the allegations, which he called "utterly preposterous, but said they amounted to, at most, "inappropriate touching".
No charges have been brought against the 67-year-old comedy star.
Mr Phillips said Cosby's accuser lived in Canada, and the incident is alleged to have taken place a year ago.
Shows postponed
"I know the person making the accusation hasn't been contacted by authorities," Mr Phillips said. "We are hopeful and optimistic that no charges will be brought forward."
A spokesman for Durham Regional Police in Ontario, Canada, said they had passed on details of an allegation to counterparts in Philadelphia, where Mr Cosby lived, but did not confirm whether it involved the star.
Cosby postponed a meeting in a town hall in Cleveland, Ohio, on Thursday, as well as three forthcoming comedy shows in Florida, his publicist said, but did not say whether it had anything to do with the allegations.
Cosby emerged as one of the first black comics to have mainstream success in the US.
He was a successful stand-up before hosting the children's show Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids, and starring in The Cosby Show, one of the biggest sitcoms of the 1980s.
