BBC One was named terrestrial channel of the year, having had ratings success with shows such as Doctor Who and Strictly Come Dancing.

BBC Three beat Sky One, BBC Four, Living TV and UKTV History to the title of non-terrestrial channel of the year.

Channel 4's Jamie's School Dinners was programme of the year, with Jonathan Ross voted TV personality of the year.

Ross beat presenting duo Ant and Dec, Paul O'Grady, Jamie Oliver and Sir Alan Sugar to the prize at the annual ceremony, held at Edinburgh's International Conference Centre.

Desperate Housewives, The Apprentice, Casanova and documentary series The Power of Nightmares had also been nominated in the programme of the year category.

BBC One's victory in the terrestrial category ended BBC Two's winning streak, the channel having taken the top prize for the past two years.
