Closer pips puppets at box office
Closer stars Clive Owen and Natalie Portman at Golden Globes
Clive Owen and Natalie Portman won Golden Globes for Closer
Romantic drama Closer has narrowly beaten satire Team America to the top of the UK's weekend box office chart.

Closer, a tangled love story starring Julia Roberts, Jude Law, Clive Owen and Natalie Portman, took 1.57m.

Owen and Portman have won Golden Globe awards and picked up Bafta nominations for their roles.

Team America, a Thunderbirds-style spoof by the people behind South Park, made 1.53m, according to the chart compiled by Screen International.

But if Closer's 128,432 takings from Thursday's previews were not counted, Team America would have come top.

Last week's number one, supernatural thriller White Noise, moved down to third with 1.38m, followed by Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio's highly acclaimed The Aviator with 980,000.

Boxing drama Million Dollar Baby, which also won two awards at the Golden Globes, was a new entry in fifth.

But Vanity Fair, starring Reese Witherspoon with a Bollywood twist on the classic Thackeray story, could only enter at number 13, taking almost 205,000 over the weekend.
