Franz Ferdinand frontman Alex Kapranos will discuss Scotland's role in making 21st Century music as part of the Edinburgh Lectures series. Kapranos will join the prestigious annual event at the University of Edinburgh's Reid Hall on 2 February.
Previous speakers have included former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev and author Professor Stephen Hawking.
Lord Provost of Edinburgh Lesley Hinds hoped Kapranos would "introduce a new generation to The Edinburgh Lectures".
Brit nominations
Glasgow band Franz Ferdinand have been nominated for five Brit Awards, including best British group and best British album.
Their self-titled debut album won last year's Mercury Music Prize and spawned three top 20 singles.
The Lord Provost said: "I hope that the input from Alex, who is at the cutting edge of popular culture, will capture the imagination of Edinburgh's young people."
The Edinburgh City Council series features talks and discussions by representatives of the art, business, media and academic worlds.
