Redgrave said the RSC had given her time to "fully recover" |
Actress Vanessa Redgrave's return to the Royal Shakespeare Company stage in Stratford-upon-Avon has been cancelled to let her recover from an operation. Redgrave was due to star in 44 performances of Hecuba at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre from February - 43 years after she last acted in the town.
The actress gave no details of her operation but said she was "so glad" to still be able to join the production.
The Greek tragedy will now open at London's Albery theatre on 26 March.
'Grateful'
Redgrave said: "I am very disappointed that I can't play Hecuba at Stratford-upon-Avon, and that audiences who've made their bookings won't be able to see the play there.
"I am grateful though that the RSC season in London gives time for me to fully recover from an operation."
Tony Harrison's new version of the Euripides tragedy has had its London run extended until 7 May, when it will move as planned to the Kennedy Centre in Washington and the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York in June.
People who booked for cancelled Stratford-upon-Avon performances will get refunds or tickets for alternative London dates.
The RSC is rescheduling a programme of performances for the Royal Shakespeare Theatre to replace Hecuba.
