Edmonds, who has worked at the BBC for more than 30 years, said he was leaving because he found the programmes "too boring".

A BBC spokesman said the corporation was not surprised at the announcement as his contract expires in March.

"In his time he has been a great performer and come up with some fantastic, innovative ideas. It is sad when the veterans move on but it always makes room for fresh ideas and fresh talent," said the spokesman.

Comeback possible

Edmonds was paid an estimated �5m for a four-year contract to host Noel's House Party, Telly Addicts and Telly Years. But Noel's House Party was axed in March after ratings plummeted from 15 million to eight million.

The presenter was said to be sad to be "throwing in the towel" but did not rule out a comeback if the right offer came along.

His spokesman Paul Pascoe said his reasons for leaving were similar to those of sports presenter Des Lynam, who decamped to ITV last week saying he felt he had gone stale.

"He is only 50, he has a lot of life in him yet," said Mr Pascoe.

"I know that he has not been stimulated by television for the BBC for 18 months or two years or so. So he has decided not to extend his contract at the end of March.

"It is a sad day when you have belonged to an organisation for 30 years and you feel that you want to throw in the towel."
