Oscar-winning film director Oliver Stone has been fined $100 (55) after pleading no contest to a drugs charge.

The 58-year-old was charged with marijuana possession after being stopped at a routine traffic checkpoint in Beverley Hills in May.

Stone's lawyers entered the plea on his behalf at a court hearing on 29 July, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles District Attorney's office said.

Stone is known for films including Platoon and the recent Alexander.

In 1999, Stone also pleaded no contest to driving under the influence and guilty to cannabis possession in Beverly Hills.

He was given three years on probation in that case.
