System Of A Down and Green Day will go head to head at this year's Kerrang! Awards with five nominations apiece.

The two bands will fight it out for titles including best single, best album and best band of the planet.

Also in the running are Foo Fighters and My Chemical Romance in a list dominated by US acts. Nine Black Alps and Fightstar vie for British newcomer.

The rock awards take place on 25 August at a London ceremony hosted by actress turned rock star Juliette Lewis.

British rockers The Darkness triumphed at last year's Kerrang! Awards, winning two awards for the second year running, including best live band.

However the best band on the planet title was taken by veterans Metallica.

Contenders for this year's best band on the planet include Green Day, My Chemical Romance, System Of A Down, HIM and Foo Fighters.

Feeder, Stereophonics, Funeral for a Friend, Placebo and Cradle of Filth will contest the best British band title in a list of nominations that features few British contenders.

Eight of the awards are voted for by the public, with the remainder judged by the Kerrang! team.

Last year saw the introduction of a new icon award presented to the surviving founder members of seminal 1960s band MC5.
