Jabba the Hutt is the star of the show for Lali Chetwynd

Lali Chetwynd is joined on the shortlist by Luke Fowler, Ryan Gander, Christina Mackie, Donald Urquhart and Daria Martin.

All the finalists will share �40,000 in prize money. The overall winner will get an extra �20,000.

The winner, chosen by a panel of judges, will be announced in April.

"This year's shortlist shows originality to be entirely possible," said one of the judges, Cerith Wyn Evans.

"This exhibition is a chance for artists to be seen rather than (mis)heard," he added in a statement.

Ryan Gander has exhibited in the US, England and Europe

Former Turner Prize winner Wolfgang Tillmans is also on the judging panel.

Oxford-born Christina Mackie's past work includes a crushed set of styrofoam cups.

Luke Fowler, who is based in Glasgow, produces documentary films, including his study of psychoanalyst RD Laing, titled What You See Is Where You're At.

Ryan Gander's work features a broad range of techniques including illustrated novels, installations and adverts.

Daria Martin was born in the USA but is now based in London. Her films include Birds, which looks back at fashion history.

The artists' work will go on show at the ICA gallery in London from 18 March until 15 May before transferring to Glasgow.

The Beck's Futures prize was created in 2000 for UK-based artists and has since been regarded as one of the most prestigious contemporary art prizes.

Previous winners include Roderick Buchanan, Tim Stoner and last year's winner, Saskia Olde Wolbers.

Donal Urquhart's ink drawings feature modern pop art figures including George Best, Elizabeth Taylor and Judy Garland.
