Smiths win over UK film audiences

Jolie has denied reports of a romance with co-star Pitt
Mr and Mrs Smith, the spy drama starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, has topped the UK box office chart on its first week of release.

The action thriller, starring Pitt and Jolie as married assassins hired to kill one another, trumped the current Star Wars film after three weeks.

It took �3.9m on its opening weekend, putting it top of the box office on both sides of the Atlantic.

India's Parineeta was the only other new film to breach the top 10.

Directed by Doug Liman, executive producer of The Bourne Supremacy, the film has been released amid rumours of a relationship between the stars.

Comic book action film Sin City continued to perform well at number three, taking more than �1m at the weekend.

The Pacifier, starring Vin Diesel, and horror remake House of Wax with Paris Hilton, round out the top five.

However, The League of Gentlemen's Apocalpse - the feature film based on the BBC Two comedy series, fell to number seven after just one week.
