| Thursday, 29 July, 1999, 11:16 GMT 12:16 UK Ricky faces MTV rock challenge ![]() Korn: Nine nominations for MTV awards Hard rock act Korn dominate the MTV Video Music Awards shortlist in the US - with nine nominations compared to Latin heart-throb Ricky Martin's six. Martin is up for Video of The Year for Livin' La Vida Loca, as well as Best Male Video, Best Pop Video and three other prizes. Livin' La Vida Loca is currently at number one in the UK, and has been a hit around the world for the 27-year-old, whose debut English language album features a duet with Madonna. But Korn could score an upset - they have nine nominations for their single Freak On A Leash.
Soul trio TLC tie with Ricky Martin on six nominations for their track No Scrubs, while Will Smith is also on six for Wild Wild West and Miami. Lauryn Hill, who dominated this year's Grammy awards, is nominated for five awards, the same as rapper Busta Rhymes. British representation is limited this year. Fatboy Slim's Praise You is nominated for the Best Dance video and, Best Choreography and Breakthrough Video awards. And Unkle, the collaboration between producer James Lavelle and dance act DJ Shadow, is also nominated in the Breakthrough Video category for Rabbit In Your Headlights.
The Video of the Year will be fought for by Ricky Martin, Korn, Will Smith, Lauryn Hill's Doo Wop (That Thing), and the Backstreet Boys' I Want It That Way. Best Male Video features Ricky Martin, Will Smith, rapper Eminem's My Name Is and Lenny Kravitz's hit Fly Away. Lauryn Hill heads the Best Female Video shortlist, along with Jennifer Lopez's If You Had My Love, Madonna's Beautiful Stranger and Britney Spears' Baby One More Time. Former New Kids On The Block singer Jordan Knight makes his return to the MTV awards stage - he is nominated for best dance single for his track Give It To You. Selected viewers, journalists and industry representatives will vote for the winners by secret ballot.
