Jens Lucking wanted to capture the girls' strong characters |
A picture of three Japanese schoolgirls has won the 15,000 Schweppes photographic portrait prize. Photographer Jens Lucking, who lives in London, took the picture of the unknown girls in Tokyo.
"They all come across as strong females so that's how I show them - self-confident, almost arrogant," he said.
"I was desperate to avoid that cute, looking-down, Japanese schoolgirl thing, and I think this portrait is the antithesis of that."
Judges picked through nearly 8,000 submissions before coming up with a shortlist of four photographs.
Paul Plews, 24, was awarded the Deloitte Award for photographers under 25, for his portrait of a woman on Blackpool seafront.
The judges also selected their favourite 61 portraits to be included in an exhibition at London's National Portrait Gallery from 17 November 2004 to 20 February 2005.
