Northern Ireland poet Michael Longley and broadcaster Tom Paulin are among the 10 people shortlisted for the �10,000 TS Eliot Prize for poetry. Longley has won the prize once before in 2002 for his collection The Weather in Japan.
The shortlist also includes Peter Porter and Ruth Padel and the prize is named after Eliot - a founder member in 1953 of the Poetry Book Society.
Poet Laureate Andrew Motion said it was "the prize most poets want to win".
Paulin, a member of the panel for the BBC's Newsnight Review, was last shortlisted for the award in 1999.
Previous winners include Don Paterson, Ted Hughes and Anne Carson.

- George Szirtes - Reel
- John Hartley Williams - Blues
The judging panel includes Paul Farley, who won the Forward Poetry Prize in 1998 and the Whitbread Poetry Award in 2002.
He is joined by Scottish poet Douglas Dunn and Welsh-based writer Carol Rumens.
The judges will make their decision on 17 January 2005, when the award will be presented by TS Eliot's widow Valerie in London.
