Elton developing rock comedy show
Sir Elton John
Sir Elton has written a song for the TV comedy
Sir Elton John is developing a comedy about an ageing rock star based on a number of his contemporaries, reports trade paper Variety.

He says the show for the ABC network will be like an "upmarket Spinal Tap".

"It's not about me, but about everybody we've encountered over the past 30 years," Sir Elton told Variety.

"We've met every star and seen every misbehaviour. And it's about the people around the star, who have to put up with them."

Sir Elton's long-term manager Bob Halley came up with the concept three years ago, convincing the singer of its potential based on the lives of other male rock stars including Rod Stewart, Mick Jagger and Freddie Mercury.

Also involved in the project is songwriter Bruce Roberts, Michael Edelstein and screenwriter Cindy Chupack, who worked on Sex and the City.

'Wacky family'

"Elton's been very public about the craziness of his life," Mr Edelstein said.

"There's nothing like the world of rock'n'roll. He's got a hairdresser, valet and two straight SWAT bodyguards on staff. They've assembled their own wacky family.

"Elton's witty, relevant and has always been on the cutting edge in both his personal life and musically," he added.

Sir Elton, 57, has already written a song for the show, Him and Us, which will appear on his album Peachtree Road, released in the US on Tuesday.

The singer is known for his own diva-like behaviour, recently hitting the headlines for having a tantrum with photographers in Taiwan.

He also caused a furore when he criticised Madonna for not always singing live, although he has since said he regretted making the comments.
