Star Wars robot R2D2 has won a poll to find the world's favourite robot. The diminutive 'droid, who starred in all five of the Star Wars films so far, beat the kleptomaniac, alcoholic robot Bender from animation Futurama.
In third place was Crow from the series Mystery Science Theater 3000, while R2D2's mechanical companion C3PO was fourth in the Amazon.co.uk/IMDB poll.
At number five was robot Number Five, the star of the 1980s science fiction comedy Short Circuit.
The top ten of the poll - which was voted for by more than 8,000 people - also included The Iron Giant (seven) and Gort from The Day the Earth Stood Still (nine).
"R2D2 and C3PO add a certain degree of comic relief to the Star Wars films," said an Amazon spokeswoman.
"However, as well as making us laugh, they also represent loyalty and friendship," she said.
The Daleks, the warlike robotic race from Doctor Who, made number 12 on the list.
There has been a recent campaign to reinstate them into the new series of the BBC's science-fiction show, which is currently filming and will star actor Christopher Eccleston.
