Long wait for return of Sopranos
James Gandolfini in The Sopranos
Gandolfini's character Tony Soprano is the star of the show
Fans of mob drama The Sopranos will have to wait until 2006 for the next series of the hit television show.

Bosses at US cable network HBO, which produces the show, said the episodes would be "worth waiting for".

HBO chief Chris Albrecht made the announcement to journalists at a meeting of the Television Critics Association (TCA) on Thursday.

Filming on the sixth series of The Sopranos, starring James Gandolfini, is not due to start until 2005.

The Sopranos, which began in 1999, is the most successful US cable TV series.

It follows the story of New Jersey mob boss Tony Soprano, played by Gandolfini.

The fifth series of the show is due to start on E4 in August and Channel 4 in September.
