Children's show The Teletubbies was a massive success

The shows have been named among the 50 most influential television programmes in British broadcasting history.

But favourites such as Only Fools and Horses, EastEnders and Dad's Army did not make the cut.

Broadcast magazine, which compiled the list, said the 50 programmes were chosen because they "pushed television boundaries".

The list includes shows across many diverse genres including entertainment, factual, news and sport.

The judging panel, which included Endemol UK chairman Peter Bazalgette, BBC controller of drama series Mal Young and Five's head of news and current affairs Chris Shaw, was asked to look for shows that had invented, or reinvented, genres.

A total of 33 of the 50 programmes are BBC shows, 12 are from ITV and four are from Channel 4. Sky also won a spot for its 24-hour news channel.

Big Brother was listed for its impact in creating the reality genre, while docu-soap Driving School was described as "the first and probably the best of the docu-soaps".

Both Brookside and Coronation Street were chosen for setting "a template for soaps", but EastEnders did not make the list.

Children's television shows Blue Peter, Teletubbies, Tiswas and Watch with Mother, all merited a mention.

The list, which was not ranked in any order, was compiled by 16 judges, 13 of whom were media executives.

Steptoe and Son was "the first major sitcom to get the nation talking", while the judges said The Royle Family "portrayed the humdrum nature of working-class life far more vividly than any docu-soap ever could".

Big Breakfast, Pop Idol, The Forsyte Saga, Doctor Who and Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, also made the final fifty.

Factual programmes include the BBC's memorable Video Diaries, Sir David Attenborough's Life on Earth, and ITV's The World at War.

"This is a list of shows that have created the television we watch today", said Conor Dignam, Broadcast's editor.

"This was never going to be an easy task. Every programme on this list had to fight furiously for its place.

"For better or worse they carved out today's television landscape."
