UK opening for Spider-Man sequel
Spider-Man 2
Tobey Maguire returns as superhero Spider-Man
Spider-Man 2 is opening in the UK on Friday, with expectations its box office sales will exceed the original.

The movie, which stars Tobey Maguire as the web-slinging hero, has already opened in the US to positive reviews and record-breaking audiences.

The comic book sequel took $257m (140m) over two weeks and has remained at the top of the US box office chart.

The original Spider-Man grossed more than $820m (448m) worldwide when it opened in 2002.

In the US and Canada, Spider-Man 2 took $40m (21m) on its opening day and crossed the $200m (109m) mark in a record eight days.

Action

It received its UK premiere in London's Leicester Square on Monday, with stars Maguire and Kirsten Dunst attracting a huge crowd of screaming fans.

The sequel begins two years after the first film ended, with reluctant superhero Peter Parker having trouble accepting his role as a crimefighter.

He quits his double life only to swing back into action when Dr Otto Octavia is transformed in to the tentacled villain Dr Octopus, played by British actor Alfred Molina.

Dunst once again plays Peter Parker's love interest Mary Jane Watson.
