DVD review: Cold Mountain

Cold Mountain
Cold Mountain's DVD gives you plenty of extras

Nicole Kidman, Jude Law and Renee Zellweger are the stars of director Anthony Minghella's American Civil War blockbuster Cold Mountain, which has gone on sale on DVD in the UK.

Injured Civil War soldier Inman, played by Law, journeys home to Cold Mountain to be with his love Ada, played by Kidman.

In his absence, Ada has been having a hard time of things too.

Like The English Patient, this Minghella film feels too long: not by very much, but by enough that you think of it and feel a bit restless.

But then like all his films it looks beautiful, the acting is spot on, and there are memorable moments.

You'd just want a few more. Minghella provides an audio commentary and there are a lot of extras.

So much so that it comes with a second disc. The highlight is perhaps a half-hour Making Of but there's also more than an hour about Cold Mountain itself plus deleted scenes.

Along Came Polly

Jennifer Aniston stars with Ben Stiller in a romantic comedy that's as light as air.

Along Came Polly
Along Came Polly is light-hearted fun

She's a wild child, he's an obsessive "risk averse" control freak. You've just pictured the entire plot and have no doubt how it all ends. Yet for all that it's predictable, this is an enjoyable romp.

Whether you'll like it enough to listen to the commentary and watch the deleted scenes is another matter.

Kung Fu: The First Season

Sometimes nostalgia comes in nothing short of a torrent as here in the classic TV series starring David Carradine.

Carradine thinks too highly of the show, he's a bit embarrassing at the end of a mini Making Of, but what was seen as a haunting drama still is.

It's the archetypal tale of a stranger who comes to town, is misunderstood, yet manages to do some good there.

And moves on. Highly stylised, it's more violent than you remember and while a bit grainy, looks good.

The odd thing is that it's in widescreen and really shouldn't be. It looks as if the original print has been cropped top and bottom.
