| Sunday, 4 July, 1999, 10:42 GMT 11:42 UK CD Review: Jennifer Lopez ![]() Jennifer Lopez: Movie, and now pop, star By the BBC's Nigel Packer Singing is set to be anything but a sideline interest for film star Jennifer Lopez. Long before Hollywood beckoned she was earning a crust performing in stage musicals. Sure enough her debut album On The Six finds Lopez as comfortable in the recording studio as she is in front of a camera. Everyone who has heard her debut UK single If You Had My Love knows she has a strong voice and it proves to be a versatile one too, if a little lacking in individuality at times. She's at her best on livelier tracks such as Let's Get Loud and It's Not That Serious, when her naturally sassy delivery allows her to really stamp her personality on a song. But she sounds less convincing on the large number of dull, heartbreak-by-numbers ballads which unfortunately pepper the album. Latin heritage
And most striking of all is the delicate Flamenco-tinged acoustic guitar which is given pride of place in songs such as Too Late and the steamy Could This Be Love. Elsewhere there are enough memorable choruses and energetic arrangements to suggest this is one of those albums which could be mined for hit singles for months to come. Despite having to handle some pretty dire lyrics throughout, Lopez stakes a claim for a place among the diva elite in years to come. Already a major player in the American charts and with huge global success sure to follow, the only problem now left for Jennifer appears to be deciding what to put first on her CV - international movie star or chart-topping pop icon. Can't be a bad lifestyle, really. | Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
