| Thursday, 1 July, 1999, 08:10 GMT 09:10 UK 'Big Voice' Liza's comeback ![]() Liza Minnelli in 1989 with Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr Superstar Liza Minnelli has declared herself fit, denied rumours of ill health, and confirmed reports that her voice is back in good shape. "I feel perfectly all right - healthy and happy. I had lost my voice completely for two years. I didn't even know if I would ever get it back," the 53-year-old told America's Daily Variety magazine. "It was terrifying. I've studied every day and now it is back. God is looking after us." In January, after suffering for months with a raw set of vocal chords following an unexplained operation, the Cabaret Oscar winner was forced to cancel the next several months of planned professional engagements. Now, according to the magazine, Minnelli is working on a new Broadway musical comedy called Minnelli on Minnelli, which portrays her relationship with her father, the film director Vincente Minnelli.
But she's had a roller-coaster life, battling career and health ups and downs. In 1984, her 20-year addiction to alcohol, Valium - which had originally been prescribed for recurrent back problems - and what she called "party drugs" began to take their toll. She checked herself into the Betty Ford Clinic in California for detoxification, counselling and rehabilitation. In 1997 she completed a troubled run in the Broadway adaptation of Blake Edwards's film, Victor/Victoria. There's also something of a rift between Minnelli and her sister, Lorna Luft. Last Sunday an all-star tribute to mark the 30th anniversary of the death of their mother, Judy Garland, was held at the London Palladium. Luft was there - Minnelli didn't attend. | Top Entertainment stories now: Links to more Entertainment stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
